FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Who can join the competition?
A: All Asian high school and college undergraduate students in the Philippines can join the 5th Ramon Magsaysay Student Essay Competition.

Q: Are graduating students still eligible to join the competition?
A: Students finishing their undergraduate course on March � May 2007 are still eligible to join the competition provided that their registration has been certified by their respective school officials and their entries submitted before the opening of classes in June 2007.

Q: Who or what do I write about?
A: The theme of the Competition is: �The Magsaysay Awardee who Inspires me Most: The Magsaysay Greatness of Spirit Lives.� You can choose one Magsaysay Awardee from our list of 256. Read about their lives and work, and write an essay on how they inspire you to a future of commitment and excellence.

Q: Where can I find reference materials on the Magsaysay Awardees?
A: The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation has published the Book of Record, a fourteen-volume compilation of awardee biographies; the Book of Citations, an anthology of the official commendations given to Magsaysay Awardees from 1958-2002; and a CD version of the Book of Citations. These are available at the Asian Library, G/F, Ramon Magsaysay Center, 1680 Roxas Boulevard, Manila; Book of Record volumes are also available at selected school libraries nationwide. You may also visit the RMAF website, www.rmaf.org.ph.

A limited number of the Book of Citations may be purchased from the Foundation at discounted rates of Php 250 for the book edition and Php 150 for the CD. Send your orders to the above address or call in 521-3166 to 85, local 161 or 180.

Co-published with Anvil are two popular books: Great Men and Women of Asia Volumes 1-5 and Young Pens for Young Minds. These are available in National Bookstore, Powerbooks, and other book stores nationwide.

Q: What are the competition requirements?
A: Your essay must be in English from two (2) to (3) pages, or 500-1,000 words in length in 8.5� x 11� paper, double-spaced with one (1) inch margin on all sides. Use 12 pt. Times New Roman or Book Antiqua. You may or may not put a title in your essay.

Q: Where can I register?
A: Instead of submitting an entry form, students are required to register online in www.rmaf.org.ph to enter the competition.

Q: Can I send more than one entry?
A: Only one entry per contestant is allowed.

Q: Should I put my name on the essay?
A: You should only provide your name and other particulars on the registration form and not on the submitted electronic copy of your essay.

Q: Where do I send my entry?
A: After registration, you email your essays to rmsec5phil@gmail.com. You must indicate in your email the code generated during registration.

Q: When is the deadline for submission?
A: The deadline for submission is on 10 August 2007.

Q: How do I know if I qualify as a regional finalist? As national winner?
A: All regional finalists will be notified by the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation by phone, fax, or email. It is thus important for you to indicate your contact number and address during registration. National winners are announced during the RMSEC Awarding Ceremonies during the Magsaysay Awards season in September 2007.

Q: What are the prizes at stake?
A: Eight regional finalists (4 high school and 4 college) will receive a multi-media computer system for themselves. The two grand prize winners, to be chosen from among the regional finalists, will each receive Php 50,000.
