Magsaysay Awardees working on the Environment
 
    ANGEL ALCALA - 1992 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Public Service from the Philippines. A marine ecologist by training, Dr. Angel Alcala has been working to rehabilitate and restore the vitality of the Philippines' coral reefs. He established the country's first marine sanctuary, and proved that with community involvement and support marine life can be preserved and enriched, alongside increased catch for the fishermen.   read more...
 
    CHANDI PRASAD BHATT - 1982 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Community Leadership from India. Chandi Prasad Bhatt organized the Dasholi Gram Swarajya Mandal (Society for Village Self-Rule), which offered jobs in Indian village and small-scale forest-based industries. In 1973, he developed a peaceful and personal way to prevent the destructive felling of trees.   read more...
 
    LIANG CONGJIE - 2000 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Public Service from China.     ANTONIO OPOSA JR. - 2009 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee from the Philippines. Antonio Oposa Jr. believes that the worsening situation of the marine ecosystem, particularly in the Visayan Sea ecoregion, can be reversed, for the sake of future generations.     SEIEI TOYAMA - 2003 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Peace and International Understanding from Japan. A former professor and a Japanese authority on desert agriculture, Seiei Toyama decided to spend his retirement years reversing the increasing desertification of Inner Mongolia, and thus preserve the numerous communities being destroyed by yearly sandstorms coming from the Gobi desert.   read more...
