Yuan Longping
Description
2001 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Government Service from China. As a young plant scientist, Yuan Longping recoiled from the horror of China's great famine of the late 1950s and vowed to do something about it. Years of painstaking experimentation led, in 1974, to the world's first successful system for producing high-yielding hybrid rice on a large scale. Today, half of China's riceland is planted to Yuan's hybrids and his technology — continuously improved at his China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center — is spreading through Asia. This offers hope that in years ahead an ancient dream of Asia may well come true: There will be rice for everyone.
