2002 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Journalism, Literature, and Creative Communication Arts from Nepal. As a young newspaperman in Nepal, Bharat Koirala learned the ropes of journalism under strict state censorship. But as founder and lifetime mentor of the Nepal Press Institute (from 1984), he trained a new breed of professional reporters and laid the groundwork for an independent press in the years to come. Later projects such as small-town "wall newspapers," local community newspapers, and, more recently, community-based radio stations are democratizing journalism in Nepal and spreading its impact to many once-isolated towns and hamlets.
