Chandi Prasad Bhatt

Description

1982 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Community Leadership from India. Chandi Prasad Bhatt organized the Dasholi Gram Swarajya Mandal (Society for Village Self-Rule), which offered jobs in Indian village and small-scale forest-based industries. In 1973, he developed a peaceful and personal way to prevent the destructive felling of trees. Chipko Andolan (Hug The Tree Movement) had DGSM members and village women wrap their arms around forest trees, shielding them from woodcutters’ saws. Since then, the movement has spared India’s forests from further denudation, organized informative eco-conservation camps for scientists and students, launched reforestation projects and seedling nurseries, and successfully negotiated with the government to increase the number of protected forest areas. C.P. Bhatt continues to educate communities through his popular multi-sectoral eco-development camps, and serves as a senior adviser to government planning and policy-making bodies.
