1992 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Public Service from the Philippines. A marine ecologist by training, Dr. Angel Alcala has been working to rehabilitate and restore the vitality of the Philippines’ coral reefs. He established the country’s first marine sanctuary, and proved that with community involvement and support marine life can be preserved and enriched, alongside increased catch for the fishermen. He also built the country’s first artificial reef, which has since become a model for dozens of others. A staunch protector of the environment,he has prevented the construction of harmful hydroelectric dams in a virgin rainforest and helped to evict commercial seaweed producers from the Tubbataha Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dr. Alcala is currently the Executive Director of the Silliman University-Angelo King Center for Research and Environmental Management.
