Rajendra Singh
Description
2001 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Community Leadership from India. Rajendra Singh settled in Alwar, Rajasthan, a district where the degraded environment had rendered the land barren and the people destitute. He founded Tarun Bharat Sangh (TBS, or Young India Association), which organized Alwar’s villagers to revive, repair and deepen their neglected johads (traditional earthen water reservoirs) to catch and store rainwater, eventually restoring moisture to the soil and revitalizing four rivers. Today, 8600 johads are found spread over 6500 sq.km. of Alwar. Mr. Singh also mobilized community-led institutions in each village, including the Mahila Mandal, which organizes local women’s savings and credit; and the River Parliament, with representatives from ninety villages, which collectively determines the allocation and price of water along the Arvari River. Mr. Singh is currently campaigning to clean and restore the polluted Yamuna River.
