Liang Congjie
Description
2000 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Public Service from China. As founder of Friends of Nature, he alerted society to the environmental catastrophe created by China's industrial revolution, working with the groups who could effectively espouse change: central government, media, and the studentry. Addressing sensitive issues and often treading at the very edge of controversy, he has avoided the pitfall of alienating government -- still China's most powerful medium of change -- and has produced a replicable model for his country's new generation of voluntary organizations.
