Kiran Bedi

Description

1994 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Government Service from India. Kiran Bedi was the first and highest-ranking woman officer in the Indian Police Service. In her 35-year career, she was known for meticulous planning and ruthlessly impartial enforcement of the law. Through her programs, citizens consulted with constables, and former bootleggers were redirected to honest livelihoods. As inspector general of Tihar, India’s largest prison complex, she instituted programs through which inmates are imbued with positive attitudes and practical skills for life beyond the walls. Ms. Bedi founded two NGOs, Navjyoti and India Vision Foundation, which reach out to over 10,000 beneficiaries daily, in the areas of drug abuse treatment, schooling for children of prisoners, and education, training, counseling, and health care for the poor.
